Spring has sprung and our flock of ewes have started lambing. The sires of this year’s lambs are a Type 5 dorper ram and a young home-grown ram that has Type 5 qualities. We have been very impressed with the uniformity and vigor of each lamb born. There are already some ram lambs that have caught our eye and we have decided that we will be growing out some future herd sires this year.
I also want to give a shout out to our ewe flock! Culling for excellent milk production, mothering, and a type 5 ewe has paid off again this year. All ewes have given birth independently and had their lambs clean, dry, and nursing by the time I go to the barn to check on them. Culling can be difficult at times, especially if you are a shepherd like me and get to know each member of the flock. I deeply believe that it is our responsibility as breeders to improve our flocks – thus improving the quality of sheep in our areas.
These lambs will be ready to view in late May. Stay up to date with with our Facebook page!
